National Passenger Safety Week: Why Passengers Must Take Action to Save Lives

Every year, thousands of lives are lost on U.S. roadways due to reckless driving, and the numbers are rising. While much attention has been placed on drivers, passengers have an often overlooked but crucial role in road safety. In fact, passengers can be the key to preventing accidents.

What is National Passenger Safety Week?

National Passenger Safety Week, observed during the last week of January, was officially recognized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2023. The week is part of a nationwide campaign led by We Save Lives, the National Road Safety Foundation, and over 60 other organizations to promote safer roads by empowering passengers to speak up when their safety is at risk.

The Power of Passengers

While the driver controls the car, passengers play an important role in influencing how safely the vehicle is driven. Passengers can:

  • Stay alert: Monitor the driver for signs of distraction or impairment.

  • Speak up: If the driver is speeding, texting, or driving under the influence, passengers should voice their concerns.

  • Encourage safe choices: Suggest taking a break if the driver is tired or stressed.

  • Offer to drive: If things feel unsafe, passengers can volunteer to take over.

National Passenger Safety Week aims to remind everyone that road safety is a shared responsibility. When passengers speak up, they can prevent accidents and save lives.

How You Can Help

Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Speak up when you feel unsafe in a car.

  • Share the message of National Passenger Safety Week to raise awareness.

  • Educate yourself on safe driving practices and help promote them.

We all have a part to play in making our roads safer. By taking an active role in our own safety and that of others, passengers can make a significant impact in reducing traffic deaths.

Let’s take action and make every ride safer—together.
